Clinical psychologist Dr. Tony Hill is asked to help police track down the brutal killer of three men in Bradfield. Detective Inspector Carol Jordan hopes his skill as a profiler will crack the case, but Tony's off-beat methods cause others to dismiss him. When a cop is killed, the pressure for results mounts. The police focus on the gay scene, while Tony is convinced the killer is sending a message on the body of his victim.

2. 1- 2 21 Nov 02 The Mermaids Singing, Part 2
Carol builds a strong relationship with Tony. She uses all her police skill to produce as much evidence as possible, and then Tony analyses every detail. He puts himself in the killer's shoes, until he can almost sense the killings themselves. As Tony nears the solution, having discovered the ultimate profile of the killer they're pursuing, he becomes the unsuspecting target of the killer himself.

3. 1- 3 28 Nov 02 Shadows Rising, Part 1
When two teenagers' bodies are pulled from a Northumberland lake, Dr. Tony Hill immediately suspects a multiple killer. As the dead girls are identified as suspected runaways, the attacks on the Vances escalate dramatically.

4. 1- 4 5 Dec 02 Shadows Rising, Part 2
Carol and Tony find their relationship challenged by running parallel investigations rather than working on the same one. The attacks on the Vances escalate, and when further human remains are discovered in the tarn, a connection between the two cases is discovered, suggesting that the Vances may be next.

5. 1- 5 12 Dec 02 Justice Painted Blind, Part 1
An 11-year-old-girl is abducted and a young woman is strangled. DS Merrick is quickly convinced that a known paedophile, acquitted of murder three years before, has struck again, leading to a clash with Tony Hill, who believes that the attacks suggest a different killer.

6. 1- 6 19 Dec 02 Justice Painted Blind, Part 2
Paul Gregory makes an unexpected confession, forcing DI Jordan to release her prime suspect in the murder investigation. Dr Tony Hill believes that the killer is dispensing a perverted justice, while Carol's new boyfriend has his own idea as to who the murderer might be. Meanwhile, there are two unsolved paedophile crimes to investigate.

7. 2- 1 19 Jan 04 Still She Cries
Dr Tony Hill is working with Maggie, a patient of his for over 5 years, to locate where she buried her victims. But he finds his work with the police compromised when he allows one of his own pupils, Laura, to help with the investigation as part of her PhD studies. When a student from his university is abducted and murdered and he won't let Laura help, she lashes out at him and unwittingly provides a link to the killer.

8. 2- 2 26 Jan 04 The Darkness of Light
Bodies of are discovered at the Norton Hotel during the digging of new foundations, and the hotel is subsequently burned to the ground. Further digging at the grounds, the site of an old abbey, uncovers older corpses, suggesting that the murderer has been operating across five centuries.
