Inhaltsangabe: Die USA in den 50er Jahren: Atom-Hysterie und Kalter Krieg sind auf dem Höhepunkt. Kein Wunder, dass der kleine Hogarth aus dem verschlafenen Nest Rockwell in Maine von Aliens fantasiert und den ganzen Tag seine Spielzeug-Laserpistole schwingt.

Doch als eines Tages ein Fischer im Restaurant von einem riesigen Metallmann erzählt, der vor der Küste ins Meer gefallen sein soll, scheinen Hogarths Fantastereien wahr zu werden. Tatsächlich: Im Wald findet der Junge einen 15 Meter großen Giganten aus Metall, der trotz seiner Furcht einflößenden Erscheinung im Grunde naiv und harmlos ist.

Szenenfoto Hogarth freundet sich mit ihm an, doch dummerweise hat der Gigant aus dem All einen Mordsappetit auf Metall und vertilgt einige Autos. Die Bürger von Rockwell sind erschrocken: Ist es ein Monster, ein Außerirdischer, eine russische Geheimwaffe, die ihre Autos verschwinden lässt?

Die Regierung schickt den etwas trotteligen Agenten Kent Mansley, der dieser Sache nachgehen soll. Kann Hogarth seinen neuen Freund vor dem Geheimdienst verstecken? Oder wird der paranoide Mansley den Giganten aus dem All finden - und zerstören?
